A Night of Celebrations

Last Thursday, the Phi Kappa Literary Society not only welcomed two new members, Sister Alexis Robinson and Brother Ryan Mikulka, into our society along with the eight other new siblings we’ve inducted this semester, but we also celebrated Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. This is the time of year for gathering with loved ones and celebrating togetherness, and the Phi Kappa Literary Society is filled with the spirit of the season. Happy autumn.

Should the University System of Georgia repeal its ban on tobacco products?

Join the historic Phi Kappa Literary Society as we debate BIHR: The University System of Georgia should repeal its ban on tobacco products.

This is a current event that affects hundreds of thousands of students across the state, not just at UGA. It’s a topic that’s been widely discussed on our campus, other Georgia campuses, and it has even appeared in an article on the front page of the New York Times. All tobacco products, even e-cigarettes, are to be banned as of October 1st. Is this right? Will it be enforced? Are the changed too sudden and too broad? We all have experiences walking through clouds of smoke in the breezeway of the MLC. We know you have opinions. We do too. Come talk about it in Phi Kappa Hall this Thursday at 7 p.m. Guest participation in the debate is not required, however it is encouraged. Please come early as seats will be limited.

BIHR: Nostalgia is futile.

This Thursday’s meeting will be a little bit different. Members of the Phi Kappa Literary Society will be trying out for the Intrasociety Debate team. The Intrasociety Debate pits actives against alumni, so this year’s team must have sharp tongues, quick wits, and keen minds. Join us this Thursday to hear some fantastic speeches.

We will also be having a second debate which both members and guests can participate in: BIHR: Nostalgia is futile.

The Intrasociety tryouts lineup is as follows:

BIHR: Marriage is an outdated institution

Negate: Sis. La Mantia

BIHR: Affirmative action should be discontinued
Affirm: Brother Banton
Negate: Sister Pekala

BIHR: Presidential elections should be publicly financed
